Portrait Painting

All of the exercises pertaining to the figure are repeated in portrait sessions. And portrait painting is handled in much the same way as the figure. After studying drawing of the head, neck, shoulders and hands, painting from both the live sitter and from drawings of the live sitter are made with an eye to learning the differences and similarities between the two. (Although many of the great portraits of the past were painted directly from life, it is important to remember that many were painted from preliminary drawings with or without intermediate comparisons with the sitter.)
